    LA AMISTAD

Who shall we send across the seas?
who to that dark forgotten place shall go?
who shall dare have the might to thread,
upon where devils and angels flee?

Who among us shall that one be,
who will sing our cold tears and woes,
of our innate and acquired pose,
clustered shame and slinking fear begets hunchback,
that pose that marks well the fallen ones.

Like chickens, sheep, goats and cattle,
were we shepherded unto LA AMISTAD,
at each clap of the fiery whip,
our panting blood runs free with our sweat,
our wails and cries to heavens are raised.

My beau a budding flower still,
as dark a night as ever could be,
though did put to bed a babe so fair,
one mayst ask from whence it came,
and all on board LA AMISTAD.

In tight rows and rows of misery's lines,
lay Does and Bucks in bare hides of dusty gray,
in chains and shackles from crown to sole,
no clouds, sun, stars, waves did we ever see,
down in the blind belly of LA AMISTAD.

Overboard! We were rushed on overboard,
some five and hundreds from below,
for want of bread and rum on board,
to stuff the faces and bellies of they,
who reigned in the heart of LA AMISTAD.

In awesome wonder held we thee,
in hushed solemn whisper thy name escapes,
but where were you when in waves they came,
to carte away that which you treasure,
to a fate worse than life on LA AMISTAD.

Was your abode too far to be reached,
your ears deaf, hands short and eyes blind,
to hear, see, hurry and save?
those who in you painfully did trust,
from that gruetesque fate on LA AMISTAD.

Bravo! Bravo! Iam wont to say,
to they who dared the dense angry waves,
to thread upon where devils and angels flee,
to steal, to spoil and kill,
from God or gods to LA AMISTAD.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
