    Poem Commentary

Many of our people send their kids, brothers, sisters and relatives abroad to acquire knowledge, wealth and sophistication. These ones return a disappointment not just to their loved ones but to the society in general because they go there and lose themselves coming home as foreigners than as sons or daughters of the land with the no sense of their cultures, morals and norms. A corrosion of the soul of Africa.

    Bleaching Black!

    On bended knees
her cries whip and rent the sky
wailing with her are palm trees
who angrily bow, groan and sigh

Washed away is her pride but not her pain
staring are those pale faces in collars of white
whose honey coated lips of promises and pain
stole from her bossom her sons late at night

A whisper of greener pastures of hope
blinds the eye to strange fetters that await
doubled over in toil, freedom soon elopes
broken dreams are mended with muddy hate

I long to embrace once again my mother
whose gentle love puts to rest the heat at dusk
Mama whose words and hugs are like no other
who can calm the raging giant wearing tusks

She stares, her sons return but not the same
they come frail, lean, weather beaten and pale
children waned by another, seemingly lost and lame
yet puffed up like morning dodo ready for sale

She cries for joy, pain and sorrow?
in her heart she knows there is still a tomorrow
