    Choices

My steps reverberate and it seems

The lazy oak travels with me as I stare one last

Time at its sturdy beauty whispering,

    `Good-bye for now,

I will see you in November when I

    Return to decide...'

Then my eyes move up to

Admire the powdery blue sky tapering toward

Shades of gray closer to the steamy earth

    Kissed as it is with morning dew;

    Next, glancing back to view,

    Suspended…

    As if on nothing...

    A glistening pearl moon,

    So huge!

Just sitting, poised in perfect iridescent tranquility.

Until a jet headed for Orlando International

Settles slowly in, appearing to stop, centered in…

    Oh, what a perfect

    Jet-Moon!

Tomorrow I shall verbally paint this glory as I fly out ,

Anxious to visit my children in Montana and can now

Imagine their delight when I share with them this image,

So similar, surely they will remember,

Will they compare it to the Bike-Moon of the movie from their youth?

    And we shall laugh;

Perhaps even shed a few tears

For all the yesterdays, and the promises of tomorrow.

For even now I am hearing,

    `Call home, call home!'

    Giving proof it is possible,

Even natural, to have divided loyalties.

     But in the end,

    Ultimate choices must be made,

    So…

    The question remains,

Where shall I live, by my girls?

    Or here

    Where I feel,

    Really feel…

     Alive!

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

    Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
