Come Thou Night and Lead Me

What is this existence of mine?
What am I within, am I cruel?
Is there time to know my mind?
I sleep with reticence that blights the moon
The stars all darken when I close my eyes
And soon the rain will flood my days
    My heart's become a maze
    An enigma I despise

Hark, the fleeting of gold beads
Like seeds of centuries dropping down
    My time is slipping past
Ashamed, I've drugged myself and lost my crown
What day will be my last?
Come find me in the earth
Like a kiss is your shadow cast
Upon my fragile self, what's it worth?

When I am gone and your tears come
To wash my visage, soft and clear
Come take a match and light it quick
Forget you knew I had been born
    Let light grow thick
Let darkness die with me, don't cry
For what died with the tide
    Upon Neptune's shores

I turned around to see my future
    And no one was there.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
