Fear

Fear

Shadows march across the wall
quickly getting out of his path
that he may claim his place
of control over my life

He drums long, bony fingers
against his thigh in tempo to my heart
smirking at my futile attempts
to keep my eyes open

Relentless exhaustion locks my eyes
rendering me helpless
vulnerable to his tactics
providing him opportunity

Slipping from his domain
he strolls to my body
gazing down at me
with his malicious sneer

Cruelly grasping my head
with his cold, biting hands
that mercilessly dig into my mind
he rips out all hope

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
