Poem Commentary

This poem is about a friendship gone bitter

Fools

This was us

I guess 7 long years wasn’t enough

For you to trust in me

Believe what you want

Because this was not my fault, no

I won’t hold you on my shoulders anymore

But I miss the way

We used to be sister

Running down the street

With the force of a twister

We had it all

We ruled the world

This is you

Trying to move

On with your life

Without me by your side

Well I can’t stand how you chose

To look away from the truth

But I miss the way

We used to be free

Believing in things

With the HOPE of forever

Never thought we would fall

What fools we were

This is me

Trying to believe

What I’m telling myself

I don’t need you

And it’s time to move

On to something else

Because 7 long years just wasn’t enough

For you to trust me

So set me free

Free from the memories

Of me and you

Free from the things that keep you close

I hope you’re happy

I hope you believe in something

Bigger than me

I hope that it’s sunny

And you can spread your wings

We never thought we would fall

We never thought we’d be torn a part

What fools we were

I've lost a good amount of friends who I called sisters and brothers at one point. & that's what this reminds me of. It was sad but I enjoyed how you turn into something hopeful. Good work!

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed reading it. And you are correct. A lost friendship is exactly what this poem was the result of. As difficult as a breakup between a couple can be, I think in some ways, the break up of a frienship can be even more difficult. I have found that at some point you need to let go of the hurt, wish the other person well and let go.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
