Poem Commentary

The beautiful flower bed of pansies are soon to be growing here in Arizona in the cool of the spring, that my imagination ran away with me on this story of Pansies, Viola's and Johny-Jump-Ups. I hope you enjoy it. Thanks, Annamae

ISSUES OF THE GARDEN

One Purple Pansy

With its heart shaped head

Overlapping petals

Grew In an onion bed

Pansy daily cried,

“It’s not a pleasant match”

Longing for a love

In a strong onion patch

 Viola popped up

With her face and smile

Grew beside Pansy

In hopes to stay a while

Her fragrant sweet sent

And deep violet gleam

Fell in love with Pansy

Soon to make a team

An arm reached from above

Picked the onion from its life

As Pansy longed a true love

 A flower for a wife

They married in the winter

The weather of the cold

To bare colors of their love

Purple, white and yellow gold

Pansy and Viola

Soon had starters of their own

Little Johnny-Jump-Ups’

Had suddenly sprout and grown

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
