Land Bridge

Icy winds blow over frozen soil, hard as stone
Nothing moving, except the wind
Low clouds scudding over naked crags
Against a background of barren land and leaden skies
They are walking
Nothing growing, but their hunger
Tired feet scraping over ancient ground
Moving along a path, their road to survival
It's the only life they've ever known

Following the dwindling herds of carabou
As the ice sheet drinks it's fill of the sea
Man and beast share this stingy strip of earth
Risen up above the icy waters
Somtimes the beast feeds man
But man will also feed the beast
The road is forever, the journey never ends
Who will be left to greet the sun
As it rises over their new home

Weary beyond feeling, but never complaining
The old, the sick, and the weak die
The strong live on to greet tomorrow

Greener now, the wind touched with warmth
The ice behind them, the endless journey ends
The caribou are staying here
And so will they, their home is here for now
Amid the towering pines
Between the mountains and the sea
This part of their journey over
As they sit and eat and share with each other
They make an offering
Thanking the great spirit for bringing them
To a new beginning

Very cool. I've been working on a similar project(different style)recently that deals with the search and journey of displaced peoples. Thank you for sharing, and I look forward to further installments.

You've penned an epic story laden with rich imagery. Though the lines written are artfully crafted, you made them flow with an ease that rolls of the tongue. I enjoyed your style, and subject choice. Thanks for sharing.

Beautifully crafted. The passion in which you wrote this piece is simply remarkable. You have created a tapestry stitched with truth. A 10 from me.

This is a tribute to a way of life that was hard and show the will of survival. Strong and gentle too.

Thanks you, that was my intent. Always found that part of history very interesting

To have great poets there must be great audiences too.
