MEMORY LANE

Poem Commentary

This poem was written by me as I worked as a CNA. Memory Lane is our dementia unit, that was full of unpredicting times, laughter, lack of memories and added memories. I love all my residents, those that are gone on and those that are still here.

MEMORY LANE

One sitting and swearing with words I dare not mention.
Another cries aloud, in hopes of attention.
The other rambles everywhere as if she has no choice.
While another starts to sing in a loud off key voice.
Confusion has set in, a thousand questions will this one ask.
While the other needs to go home to finish all her tasks.
Now the Flirt has awakened I must keep my eye on her.
The handsome old man with glasses is the one she prefer.
I must now go to the next room to get her out of bed.
But she would stiffen up her body and become heavier than lead!
I tap on another and say "It's time to get up".
She would stop her snoring grab her walker without even a fuss.
Another one yells out, "Someone stole my coat!"
While the other dashes out his room and say, "Can you take me to smoke?"
What is that! It sounds to me like someone's bed alarm.
I rush to his room and there he stands! saying, "I gotta go peepee hun!"
I gather clothes and to the shower room i go to give someone a bath.
In the midst of all the chaos and work I never cease to laugh.
The nurse is coming down the hall to pass out all her meds.
The residents all finish their supper and soon its off to bed.
I tuck them in and say goodnight in hopes that they will rest.
And then it's back to the dining room to chart the books and clean up all their mess.
If this poem puzzles you because I called no name.
This poem is about all my residents who live down Memory Lane.

So many times we thank God for blessings but we forget to thank Him for a peace of mind. Thanks for writing this poem.

Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.
