WALKING IN THE LIGHT

Poem Commentary

In my past I have been a part of everything the world had to offer. Everything my flesh desired I indulged in it. But God knocked at the door of my heart. I invited Him in and He brought gifts like salvation, deliverance, hope, healing, health and love. I continue to walk in The Light.

WALKING IN THE LIGHT

Awakened by the sound of a pencil scratching on paper, I opened my eyes to darkness. Looking around I could see nothing. The room was completely black. I tried to move but my hands were bound. I tried to stand but my feet were bound also. So, I began to speak saying, "Who's there? Where am I?"  No one said anything. I grew scared and uncontrollably began to weep. I wanted to know where I was and how did I get here. Suddenly I heard voices speaking among themselves. I could hear them say, "Yea, make sure you write her name down, cause we got her. What is this , number 15,000 today". Again I asked, "Who are you and where am I?" Again no reply. They just continued to talk among themselves saying, "She was so easy. All we had to do was offer this one some drugs, alcohol and arouse her lust for men and she was hooked." I wondered what and who were they talking about. "Was it me?" I started to think back over this day and what I had done.
Sure I smoked a little weed. And yes I dranked some beer with my friends. I even had sex with my new boyfriend. My thoughts began to go further back from day to day, weeks, months and even years. I thought surely what I had done did not get me to this place. I was just having fun. Everybody else was doing it. Why aren't they here? Then a heaviness came upon me and the weeping became outloud cries. I began to scream, "Let me out of here! I don't want to be here anymore! I'm sorry. I won't do those things anymore!"
Then my screams were interrupted by a loud knock at the door. Silence fell upon the dark room. The knocking continued but no one said a word. After moment,s that seemed like a lifetime, had passed I could hear the voices in the room say with fear, "It's Him. He has come to take her away. But we will not let her go. We'll continue to offer her stuff." Then another one said, "But what's left to offer her?" The other replied, "We'll give her a drug stronger than weed or what about the love for money. Maybe not just one boyfriend. We'll give her two or three." As they spoke those words all these things were coming before me. I was puzzled. I didn't know what to do. All that was being offered sounded nice but I just couldn't ignore the knocking at the door. Then one of the voices said, "It's not working!" I began to wonder who could be at the door and why the voices in the room feared whoever it was. Tired of being in the dark room afraid and tied down I knew who ever was on the other side of the door had to rescue me from where I was. So as loud as I could I screamed, "COME IN, COME IN!" The voices in the dark began to yell in agony, "NO, NO! SHE LET HIM IN!" The door flew open and an abundance of light came in. The darkness began to disappear. The radiance of the light was so bright I could not see who it was but the feelings of security and hope came upon me. I could feel the Light entering the room and approaching me. It drew near to me and began to loose the things that darkness had me bound with. I asked, "Who are you?" The Light said, "Whoever you need me to be," I replied, "Why are you here?" The Light stated, "You called me. When fear of darkness came upon you and you saw your past, you called on me. I came to save you from darkness and set you free." I again wept but this time with joy and not fear. The Light reached out I gave Him my hand and He led me out of darkness. Since then I have continued to walk in the Light!

This is really good!!! I love the way you describe your journey out of darkness, temptations and surrender. Good stuff.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
