Our Last Goodbye

How do I say my last goodbye?
We had said it so many times!
When did our love really die?
Or was that the biggest lie?

I told him not to let me fall,
From the pedestal he had me on!
He held me up so high and tall,
Then he let me fall right down!

He had made me feel so beautiful,
And I felt so cherished and loved!
At times he made my heart so full,
But when did I become so unloved?

I did not know that when we Wed,
All would become gone and lost!
And I would lose my best friend!
Was marriage worth what it cost?

I don't know which I loved the most,
The admirer or the friend he came to be.
Maybe I just needed him to love me most!
I hated when I felt he stopped loving me!

I always thought Darrell was my weakness,
But too late I know he was also my strength!
His disapointment in me made me so anxious,
But his love and loyalty was always my strength!

So here I am Darrell too late I know,
But thank you for the love you did give.
Our love story started so many years ago,
So many goodbyes but our love shall live!

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
