Show No Mercy

The fire flows from my fingertips,

It strikes anyone who’s near.

Rain falls with a single gesture,

Lightning strikes with a simple nod.

With the blink of an eye,

A whole town is flooded.

People scream as I near,

They fear the monster that I am,

They fear the power I possess,

But it doesn’t matter

Not to me anyway.

Children cry,

Mother’s flee,

For some kind of sanctuary.

Common men try to scare me,

With simple farming tools.

They perish.

Swordsmen try to slay me,

But with all my powers,

And no common sense,

I crush them,

For they mean nothing to me.

I am the worst of man’s enemies,

For I control the earth, sea, and elements.

I am unstoppable,

Until the day I die.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
