    The Return

    Just as I was beginning
    the chapters of my life,
    I came across someone
    with whom I genuinely liked.

    he came into my world,
    never knowing, unexpected
that one day I'd be his girl.

There was something about his face
    something about his touch,
    something about his inner being
    that truly meant so much.

    The moments we shared together
    are now my treasured memories,
but the moments we could have made
    were taken away from me.

    As quickly as he appeared
    he vanished from my life,
the pain I felt when he went away
    cut deeper than any knife.

    I hurt for a while
    but eventually I got through,
love is pain, pain is love
    those words--so painfully true.

    As time progressed
    I must admit,
    the memory of him
    faded a bit.

He never completely left my thought
but so much time had passed,
how could I ever truly believe
that a freshman love would last.

    10 years later...my telephone rings
I hear him on the line,
he asks if I remember him
from 10 years back in time.

    My heart skips a beat
    I recognize his name,
but I tell myself it isn't him
this man is not the same.

He gives me clues as to who he is
to prove to me he's real,
    no one could ever imagine
    the happiness I feel.

He recited a poem that I had written
10 years ago to the day,
he kept that gift for so long
there was nothing I could say.

The man I fell in love with has returned
    but now the timing's off,
but I'd rather have him now in my life
than not have him at all.

Together we'll make up for lost time
for the next 10 years and more,
I'm so glad to have you back
It's what I've been waiting for.
