Poem Commentary

Hi there

I am a Scottish person living in England and write a lot in my own dialect using words and phrases that you would only here in Scotland if any one has any difficulty in understanding what I have writing let me know and I will do my best to explain

The sharper the better tae cut wae

Raise yer hand the man that's no affected
Gold plated and well conected
Affluence and influence in the highest 'a' places
Back handers fae right known respected faces
Fine upstanding christian folk,
Invisable tae the masses,
Aye the lower classes,
Green, white 'n' gold and orange sashes.
As a scot ye say it's no a scot that's before ye
A cancer within noo that's Scotlands story
A union 'a' equals, aw marching in sequel
Ignorance of intolerance deviding blind people
Quislings devoid 'a' pride in their brothers
Relish distrust that they find in each other.
Ripping the fabric that haud men the-gither
Strength that should liberate,
Vgetates 'n' withers
And if ye cut, dae ye think yid find tartan inside
Or just maybe the stench of religious divide
Wae pockets aw full 'a' knifes 'n' axes tae grind
The sharper the better tae cut wae

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
