To Zeus, With Love

To Zeus, With Love

Some call you a pet,
Some call you a familiar
I call you my companion, my family
You needed me as much as you
You loved me as much as I love you
In sickness and health, you stood by my side
I did the same for you
All the way to the end
I fought for your life
But it was you who called the shots
You didn't ask me if it was okay to go
I wasn't ready for you to leave
I held your little paw as you fought for your next breath
I would have given you mind if I could
I tried to feed you when you couldn't feed yourself
I would have give you mine if I could
I carried you when you were too weak to go on your own
I pleaded "Please don't go!"
I was alone in this fight for your life
But it was you who called the shots
How could you just give up on us? On you?
Leaving those who love you with only memories
You were not ready to go yet
I wouldn't let you if I could
But it was you who called the shots
Now you are gone
Leaving a loving home with broken hearts
With a memory of someone so wonderful
That he started out as a kitten and became family

Oh, I understand this heartfelt poem so well. I lost a cat, only a year old. I loved her as you loved Zeus. Gorgeous poem Bast, Keep writing.

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
