As Long As It Lasts

Poem Commentary

Maybe two or three times a year in North Carolina, where I live, it will snow and it only takes a foot of it to stop everything. Businesses and schools close. Even the Churches call in to the local TV station to cancel Sunday Services. I love that about the country. Growing up, I always felt SNOW was God's way of giving people a day off to relax, recharge and reflect. In this poem, this young girl, no doubt, enjoys the snow. It sets her mind to think, notice and wonder. It even inspired her to write a poem. When you read this poem, I hope you will give your mind time to remember what you like best about the snow. I would love to hear yours and I know others would as well.

As Long As It Lasts

She likes when it snows,
Flakes fall from the sky,
It's just like, she knows;
Why it seems to fly.

For hours it fell,
She heard it last night-
And now she must tell;
A poem she will write.

She hopes it will last,
For it is so cold.
It came down, so, fast -
And glitters like gold.

She knows that the old,
Will watch as they sit,
No matter how cold;
They'll smile to see it.

Amazed by the snow,
AS LONG AS IT LASTS -
And happy right now;
Of Memories past.

I grew up in NY, so snow days were plentiful, but very welcome. I remember so many times, being glued to the radio, waiting for our school to be announced (it always seemed to be the last, well the name of it started with an "R", so it was one of the last lol), but when we heard it, we would cheer, and grab the sleds. Great write.

I wrote this poem 5:30 in the morning, as soon as I realized it really was snowing. For months now, we were told on two different occasions that it would snow. Snowing here in Greenville, NC is like having a visit from a famous celebrity. Well, that is as long as it only last two or three days and the electric power doesn't goes off. Oh, yes, when I wrote this poem, I felt like a kid all over again and misty colored memories invaded my over-joyed mind. (((I'm Glad You Liked It))) Thank you for your comment :)

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
