Poem Commentary

Frm my society collection

Brick Wall

Its silence no words/ no words/ a total brick wall

All our sons and daughters/ shot down/ just die

Sit them on the wall / BOOM/ you watch ‘em fall

They’re   broken eggshells/ Why you livin’ the lie

Disin culture/ shamin roots/ I’m still your brother

Be proud/ respect yourself/ you are who you are

Get beneath the ground/ ROOTS/same as any other

Celebrate your community/ now/ invite a neighbour

Rivers of blood/ look at it/ its blockin up the gutter

Flesh dropin/ its eating away/ a maggot infection

Step up to the plate/ SPEAK/ truth you must utter

Listen to my message/ hear me/ culture integration

Raise the blockade/ say the word/ now build that bridge

Be a teacher/ be pupil/ don’t matter your colour or creed

It’s a people war/ ENGAGE/ peace flow over that ridge

Be there for each other/ unite my brother/ plant that seed

You have the power/ don’t ask/ make that right choice

Blow it away/ remove that shadow/ stop all the killin

Join our culture/ SING/ become one/ strong with one voice

Workin to our choice/ we’re human beings/ we’re ‘Cultural Jamin’

Reminded me of the peace marchs of the late 60's. Inspirational call to peaceful arms. 10 from me.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
