Poem Commentary

part of groing up

Brother be with me

When we were growing up we were each given a role to fulfil

That placed us in a labelled box, stacked upon a shelf or sill

This box full of roles has placed a barrier stopping us sharing

Lets open up our worlds for each to value, not start comparing

Being labelled by our parents brought barricades that can derail

What advice to get? When do we listen? This made our points fail

All this confusion bread confusion in us, let us remove that barrier

Let us join our trains, share a track, becoming life’s haulage carrier

Sometimes it was hard for us to know what to say or what to do

We threw down random obstacles, where to place them! Not a clue

Barriers were put down to try to keep our paths true, not to get lost

Let us remove those between us and stop our lines getting crossed

Those childhood confines have made us and have a strong influence

Trouble is we sometimes are to scared to come from behind the fence

Fear of exposing the real us or failure sometimes forces us to hide

Let us create a channel or a bridge between us, in each other confide

We both craved for Dad’s approval, his praise, and even a mention

Scared that all our best efforts to please him wouldn’t get attention

In adulthood we still have within us a need to please, fear to fail

Let us come out of our comfort zones, really talk and not via email

Take away our old tatty labels and be proud of the person we are

Celebrate our achievements with lots in common we’ve journeyed far

Brother be with me, understanding communicating, skills to glisten

Let us each become the pupil and then the teacher, now lets listen

I think at one time or another we have all been there . WE are given a title and we try to live by it . But the poem you have penned is awesome , truthful and wonderful loved it Marie

Thank you for your kind words Marie. From all the feed back I have had from my new friends in the USA I would love to visit the states and perform on stage on day.

If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.

Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) American poet.
