Poem Commentary

Its amazing the different looks as you go about your life. What people don't see is the same person inside.

Take the ‘Dis’ out of Disable

Through the tapestry of life we see types disability set out at the table

It makes me mad who do they think they are do I really need a label

No matter what outer signs or symptoms I show I am still full of pride

Look into my eyes listen to my voice I am still the same person inside

They say that you should deal with the cards you’ve got in your deck

I had/ to shout ‘twist’ and out came the Parkinson’s card wait just a sec

Who put that card in there? when some cruel twist of fate has let it out

‘I didn’t want that card’, I say but ‘those are the rules’ to me you shout

The way I interpret my new deck of cards will still facilitate any choice

Choosing cards expands my alternatives helping others to hear my voice

The thing that alters is the type of surface on which I play not the team

I still have plans and goals they are my project to illustrate my dream

Just/because I am classed as disabled don’t you position me in a corner

Please don’t treat me the same as the nursery rhyme ‘Little Jack Horner’

All my skills and attributes are there for me to use and are not a fable

Look at me please take the ‘dis’ out of me for what you get is ‘able’

Beautifully written. I know the feelings so well. I've said them myself. My family taught me how to be strong. For that, I am grateful.

Well written and beautifully expressed. I have a niece with cerebral palsy ans she's smart, talented, and brilliant. Not only is able, she's capable. Thank you so much for sharing this. I feel your strength coming through your words. I wish you well in your struggle and continue to encourage and enlighten us with your poems.......................E

I must admit this one of my favourate poems which I have performed on stage. I wish the strength of your niece will know no bounds and she ahieve all her ambitions. Thank you once again.

Poetry is not the expression of personality but an escape from personality.
