Poem Commentary

Dance

If the music is playing
And we’re both swaying to the beat.
Why don’t we dance?

I hide like a child in the corner
Amongst the other lonely girls
Just waiting their turn.

Your eyes are saying the wheels are turning.
I know you’re thinking, but you can’t even speak.

Thinking leads to hesitation,
Which fuels the ache inside my heart.
Feel the change in the steady beat,
And dance.

We can waltz it step by step
Exactly how it’s meant to be
Or hold me close and pretend that everyone’s gone
But I can’t tango against the wall
If we must, let’s fly into the stars.
And dance.

I’m not impatient, but I’ve been waiting
For you to come and take my hand.
We can waltz it step by step
Then let the tango have its chance.
Come free my heart from out the dark
And dance.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
