Bonnie, I

    Bonnie, I

Clyde wrapped a string around my broken heart
    Saying, "Bonnie, I..."

    He tugged my ashy hands.
    Kissed my bleeding lips.
    And sang, "Come away..."
    "Come away..."

    I couldn't believe how weak
My bones were like feeble twigs.
As I tried and I tried to get to him.

But he kept screaming, "Bonnie, I..."
And I couldn't stop the tears.

My legs came out from under me
    And suddenly he disappeared.
In the distance all I could hear
    Was his tortured voice
    Screaming, "Bonnie, I..."
    "Bonnie, I..."

Poetry is either something that lives like fire inside you or else it is nothing, an empty formalized bore around which pedants can endlessly drone their notes and explanations.
