Freedom

  • My own two favorite poems are "Train of Defeat" and "The Story of Sorrow"

Freedom

The horse you brought home was meant to be free.
I heard that once you compared her to me.
You stole her freedom; penned behind a fence.
Why you did this, didn't make any sense.

You fought to work with her against her will.
You screamed and hollared until you had your fill.
You finally gave up.  She would not give in to you.
When you left her behind, you left me too.

I watched her with sadness as she paced and paced.
I knew that we had to come face to face.
She lifted her head like she understood.
I knew I'd do better than you ever could.

I got out the rope and trailed her around.
She listened to me, though I made no sound.
Soon we were friends and the day finally came
when I saddled her up and still she remained.

When the day was over and the ride was done,
I opened the gate and watched her run.
You just didn't realize she was meant to be free.
You should have known that
when you compared her to me.

I love how you put the beginning and the end of the poem together and how you are really talking about yourself when mentioning the horse

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
