That Door

  • My own two favorite poems are "Train of Defeat" and "The Story of Sorrow"

That Door

The trees are green and the sun is bright.
She does not care to see the light.
She only sees the bad of the day.
She wonders when it will all go away.
The man she loved and cared and longed for
left her weeping behind that door.
     That door.
     That door!
     What a terrible dream!
     A horrible nightmare.
     A maddening scream.
She hears the echo of that slamming door.
She listens intently like never before.
The anger.  The hurt.  The pain she felt.
She wished to die.
She wished to melt.
     That door.
     That door!
     No freedom rings.
She's locked inside with all her things.
That door reveals her loneliness.
Things turned out to be such a mess.
That door is not her security
She is as frightened as she can be.
     That door.
     That door!
     An unfaced truth.
     That door!
It does not need the proof,
that love can easily be locked away
with a chain or a bolt
     or a heart that strays.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
