    • Very excited and very grateful. My son Michael will be coming back to American soil in about 12 days I want to thank all of you for your prayers and well wishes and strength.

My Son is Going to Baghdad

The house is so dark and cold....a very early hour on this Saturday in April. The windows had been left open last night and the cold air drifted in and wrapped itself around my nose and fingertips. I cradle my warm coffee mug, hoping it will coax these old hands to type. Far off in the forest I hear the angry conversation of squirrels who are busy building nests and getting ready for the arrival of their young. Birds are chattering in the tree outside my window and even in the dark, the world is still at work, a ballet that plays over and over every day without rehearsal and always deserves a standing ovation..

The phone rang, a call from the other side of the world. My oldest boy, his father's namesake, was calling to let me know that he will be deployed to Baghdad for 6 months. He will be leaving in July. This is his second tour of Iraq. The Air Force does 6 months at a time, thank God, and his unit is rotating some in and some out. Last time he went he tried to lie and say he was going to Saudi Arabia. I guess he knew I would lay down in front of the plane to stop him and he didn't want to be embarrassed....NY moms can do that....This always takes me back to the 70's and Viet Nam. Remember the body counts on the news? After a while no one reacted anymore. It is getting that way again....My son (and all other military personal) is a volunteer. I am so scared for him, although he is not patrolling or even in a unit that gets any action, (communications) there is always the danger. I am not pro war but I do realize that we need a military presence and in my heart I can't say to another Mom," not my son, send yours..." So I will hang my banner in the window once again, light the candle, and pray very hard for his safe return. Next time you talk to God, mention my son, he sure could use the support.

     For Michael with Love....

I guess I am trying to keep us all aware of the fact that all these people are involved in a life and death struggle, what will be the prize? and yes, he emails me regularly to tell me how bored he is...a son who doesn't want his mom to worry. Thank for thinking of him

I was very touched by this, from both perspectives. In 1970, my mom had to call me in Cal. to tell me I'd pulled a very low # in the draft lottery, and that all college deferrments would be denied. We cried together, but 3000 miles apart. 8 months later, I had to call her from Chu Lai, and tried to tell her I was only in Okinawa on stand by, but she could hear the bombs in the distance even though I was safe at the moment.. We cried together again .. some 10,000 miles apart . My prayers go out to you and your son, as well as everyone's son or daughter putting their life on the line for the rest of us. It's the least I can do. Nobody ever thanked "us" ... we were spat upon and called names. God Bless ... my name .. is Michael

it breaks my heart to think of you in Nam and coming back to a country that only wanted to forget you... I will not forget you or any of your brothers and sisters who fought along side you....I was not for the war as you know, and I do not pretend that it was even remotely necessary for all us to be there, but we did not make that decision. I lost a good fried to that war and many others came back a different person. That is why I am so frightened for my son... war is so ugly even if you win! God bless you Michael, I am proud to know you. mlea

Bravery and heroism surely will not fade. Grief with worries and pain, honor your son will bring. It is also my wish and prayer that your son will always be safe. I also enjoy reading your poem. It will help if you group it in small paragraph or stanza so that It will help me pause and breath. This is truly a great reading. Keep it up!

thank you so much for taking the time to respond... I had not written that piece with the intention of it being a poem, just the ramblings of a mother one quiet morning when I usually write poetry. The phone rang and, well you know the rest. But you are right, i need to give the reader some structure. mlea
