"Shackles and Lessons"

Poem Commentary

A rough draft on which I would gladly accept criticism.  I'm debating keeping it vague (like the lessons) or planting vivid imagery in here along the way.

"Shackles and Lessons"

You set me free into the world,
As if to teach me the treachery of liberty.
And, I learned.
Shackles come in many forms.

But, it's the invisible ones
That are the greatest load to bear.
Even worse are those that I imagined.
Never there, but the weight so real, and
I to blame for the mold and the lock,

Every link forged from my hammer.
The key neatly tucked just beneath my skin
Keeping my assumptions close company.

They were in league, you see-
My assumptions and this key

Hidden like your lessons
And like the lessons
The key was not the answer.
The answer was in the searching
For every finding
Only revealed more binding.

Shackles come in many forms.

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
