Poem Commentary

one of my neighbours was attacked recently and as i ran from the other end of the street to try to help, i was struck by how many of my fellow neighbours hid behind their doors only to appear when it was all over! yet who can blame them when the first reaction of the police is to tell you that there might be very little they can do and warn you that if you get involved it is you that might face arrest no wonder the feral youths are laughing at us!

stand up

did you ever feel despair?
throw your hands up in the air?
feel there's nowhere left to turn,
just have to stand and watch it all burn.

see the ferals on the street,
policemen shrugging and looking beat
"too much paperwork"(can't do a thing)
"it's all circumstantial"( can't do a thing!)

Well, someone has to make a stand,
give a neighbour in need a helping hand
and when "the powers that be"are
              offended
that yourself and your friends you have
              defended
take their punishment although it,s
             unjust,
pretendthat the system's still deserving
            of trust.
don't let them stop you from doing good
             deeds,
for when good men do nothing, evil
         succeeds.

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
