The Night

The Night

It was a simple night,
just like any other,
with one exception,

they were out together,
happiness could not be contained,
each smiling,

feeding off each other's mood,
simple pureness,
locking hands,

walking unknown to doom,
unabated love,
very few ever see,

out in the shadows,
evil watches,
looking for its chance,

stalking them,
waiting for a opening,
a chance to strike,

they pause for a kiss,
using that moment to strike,
a gun shown,

depends money;
anything that looks valueable,
he looks away for a moment,

take a chance,
reaching for the gun,
it goes off,

seeing your eyes,
the terror,
pain rips through you,

"oh god no,"
no words to describe,
pure agony,

"it should be me,"
our eyes meet,
long kiss before calling for help,

"they are coming,
hang in there love,"
watching your light slowly fade,

moments seem to hang on an eternity,
looking around,
they should be here: NOW!

"Stay with me,
I need you love,
don't you think of giving up now,"

finally help is here,
pushed out of the way,
loading you up,

there is no time,
she is slipping,
we have to go now,

told to follow,
there is no room,
one last kiss,

"I will be right behind you,
they will fix you honey,
don't you worry,"

giving one last look into the ally,
evil looks back,
rage takes over,

the hunt begins,
all I need is a few moments,
he will pay,

a man possessed,
hunter now the hunted,
caught from behind,

struggle happens,
fists are thrown,
until shots are fired,

baptism of fire,
walking out burned,
not broken,

hiding his wounds,
must make it back to his beloved,
getting the the hospital,

struggling to walk now,
its getting cold,
must find her,

she must be ok,
one last thing to do,
falling now,

caught!
last thing I think I see,
you seeing me,

reaching out,
just barely able to touch,
pulled away,

they are crashing,
take them to the theater,
standing together,

holding each other,
the doctors try to save us,
when we already are.

standing still,
feeling each other's love,
knowing its time to go,

walking together always,
don't know where we are headed now,
but we do it together.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
