The Tree

The Tree

There was a old man who lived in a tree
He stayed there so long a skyscraper was he
He saw hookers and crack heads and things on the ground
He wondered in life
What life had been found
And then on day he decided to decend
Away from the tree a new life would begin
He decended and left the branches behind
Away from his thoughts away from his mind
As he walked the dark streets which were dirty with filth
He saw human beings filled with anger and guilt
He couldn't help wondering why everyone hurried
He couldn't help wondering why everyone worried
In his mind he knew life is not a race
It should be lived in peace and love and grace
He walked and he walked at a slow steady pace
He knew he was not a number in a race
Then he heard a loud scream which came from above
He looked up and saw a woman being shoved
As she grasped the iron fire escape
The man yelled are you OK? Are you being raped?
What can I do to help you no need to be afraid
I will climb up the ladder and come to your aide
The woman looked down at the man with tears in her eyes
Someone willing to help she found a surprise
She said to the man surprised as can be
If you really want to help
Go find me a Tree
A Tree where I can go and escape this reality

That's interesting. Did you hear on the news today where ten people gang raped a high school girl while at least ten other people stood and watched. The world can truly be a harsh place to live.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.

John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) Thirty-fifth President of the USA
