Through the Shadow

Poem Commentary

Flames through the fire...

Through the Shadow

Through the shadow, the sight
of the holiest night;
may we breathe just the same
and have no reason, restrain
be ourselves as have been
through the days of our kin,
and bring joy to ourselves as we did
way back when

Have the light brighten path
that which shadows may pass;
show open to thought which brings truth to our heart
As we strive to succession as our path through depression

be swell during heat
for your families meat
and may we feast as past kings
for as past brings truth within
as the shadow that sees every action we bring

Not forget were we came
holding pictures with flames
understanding that light will make shadows so bright
through the wreckage we pass as our shadows will last.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
