Engulfed

Turning, whirling,
 leaning out,
pulling in.
The world has me
in its grips.
I can only hold it
to my lips
for so long
until the bitter taste
breaks me down,
takes me down,
with such force
 it breaks my teeth,
I cannot speak.

Don't be alarmed
 it's a moment,
 no real harm,
just the harsh dance
calling us back,
calling back that
which was never ours
in the first place.
Life which was given
 to be taken away
again and again

Now,
 time for rest,
 time to be renewed,
but for who ?
Will someone please
 hold a candle for me
to see into this darkness,
engulfed.

We burn incense
and speak out
to honor this passing.
Has anyone really died at all?
What if we are instead the incense
burning sweetly?

A benediction then
a calling to what could never
find its way home and
asking for the strong hand of God
to push it along.

I like the allusion to the "broken teeth." It was alive for me.

thanks Lee, those teeth are hard to come by

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
