    Winter Rose

Although the evening sun had set
the winter tasks had not been met
a single rose put forth its bloom
as if it were a day in June

I stopped and looked with disbelief
it's slender stalk and shiny leaf
    appearing this December day
    velvet red, exquisite display

It didn't seem to mind the cold
and showed it's colors, bright and bold
but I was cold, so cold indeed
still felt it's warmth inside of me

The promise of a future spring
an earthen message, life to bring
would have to wait another day
I departed quickly on my way

then paused, looked back with wistful smile
at the rose that went the extra mile

"It didn't seem to mind the cold and showed it's colors, bright and bold but I was cold, so cold indeed still felt it's warmth inside of me" — the rhyming, inside and outside, of this verse is superb. Sweet poem!

This is very good. Adds a bit of warmth to a harsh cold winter. The last stanza wrapped this poem up nicely.
