    Poem Commentary

THE TITLE OF THE POEM (ERU) MEANS FEAR IN YORUBA LANGUAGE, ONE OF THE NIGERIAN LANGUAGES IN NIGERIA.

THE POEM IS A SONNET. IT IS DIVIDED INTO TWO SEGMENTS, AN OCTAVE AND A SESTET. THE FIRST PART INTORDUCES THGE PROBLEM WHILE THE SECOND PART SUPPLIES THGE SOLUTION.

    ERU!!!

    Like animals

    who hear the hunter approach,

    who for fear cannot flee,

    we cringe in terror

    of the dark Unknown.

We sweat enough to float a ship

    and whine from the itching

    pains of our unwilling lent.

    Respite is close

    at a far distance

    as we naively peer

    into the black unknown

    for solace from

    what we know not.

Tight, but too short. Don't listen to the amateurs who can't read a poem over forty words. Your imagery and symbolism is too deep to gloss over with shortness. Shortness has it's place, but you excel at the longer stuff.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
