Eyes of Death

There was a time, what seems like an eternity ago
When the world was bright and welcoming
Where the sun shone on my face, warming my flesh
And the birds sang songs of deliverance

Now that time is past, life has turned those skies grey
I sit amoung the boulders near the edge of the earth
Listening to the waves crash upon the shore
Knowing in my heart that things cannot return to as they once were

Laughter has ceased, and the birds no longer sing me songs of prose
The clouds rumble in the distance, I feel a storm approaching
The damp air stings my flesh, where the sun once shone
And all the earth seems to whisper, whisper in fear

There! A shadow! A shadow of darkness!
There! A noise! A bump in the night!
Still, my racing heart cannot jump, it cannot be swayed
Into thinking anything is real

The humming of the cars passing on the freeway
Drowns out the screaming in my mind
For once, all is silent, all is still.
Then with a roaring sigh, every memory floods back to me.

There you are again, dressed in human flesh
A demon in disguise, the devil at his worst
How I long to run to you, and tear the eyes out from you
The eyes I used to find solace in, now the eyes of death

I cannot move, frozen as a statue in a grand hall
The water shimmering like a polished granite floor
And you are here, taunting me, your presense so threatening
Yet, I cannot move, I cannot run, I cannot scream

In only a moment, all the pain was released
I looked upon myself, cried tears of sympathy
For this woman I no longer know
I turned towards you, washing your hands in the waves

No remourse, no hope, no soul
Slowly you stroll away, whistling a tune I never knew
Your feet pounding the concrete, matching the rain drops in rhythm
And the Heavens wash away all evidence that I was ever here.

Thank you :)

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
