Like Alice

Silence-
An enveloping melancholy
Masked in glorified attraction-
Running from ashes
Of a buried tale
Running my fingers
Through your hair
As I tumble down
The rabbit hold of uncertainty
Like Alice.

The wells are barren
The wasteland glaciated
Glittering as a prism
Refracting your beauty
Into the many faceted hues
Of a rainbow that leads
To the table where you dine
With a mad hatter
Like Alice.

Roaring vigorously now
The turbulent seas of my desire
Drifting along with gratitude
For your salvation-
A tea cup amidst a tidal wave-
Tossed and battered
Drowning in your embrace
Just a little girl lost in a dream
Trying to find a way home
Like Alice.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
