    Poem Commentary

Needs work, but I got lazy with it.

If I Told You The Truth

If I told you the truth, I know you would not believe me
A thousand lies with my eyes never seemed to be beneath me
But this moment in time is so perfect in my mind
I want stop this moment and freeze you
Because I know that I cannot be
what you need in order to please you
At times it seems I'm emotionless
    while your caress is effortless
Tumbling down the walls of my fortress of heartlessness
But despite your levels of superstitious intuition
You cannot discern that you are the manifestation of fruition
Here in this place I feel disgraced
I yearn for you to see the mask torn from my face
Blinded by affection for what seems to be perfection
How can you ever really see?
My illusion is an intrusion on what this love could be
My delusion is believing that maybe someday you'll see me
Behind the modesty and travesties with no apologies
And love me wholeheartedly despite all of these
You've only seen the woman I've wanted you to see
So I know your misunderstandings are my own doing
For you are demanding what I'm still pursuing
If only you knew the other side to me.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
