Follow A River

Follow A River

Rivers look like the veins of the earth,
but they are only water, made from rain and snow,
sometimes calm, sometimes treacherous.

I want to form a huge cliff,
and detour all the rivers of the world toward it
feeling the spray from the water plunging over;
creating the grandest,
most magnificent waterfall
ever to be seen.

But, my heart is yet young and my knowledge is limited,
I yearn to learn more, to experience more,
so, I will follow a river until the end of my time.

The river twists and turns,
emitting fury and fervor,
with shallow spots and deep pools;
like life’s ups and downs,
gingerly walking along the edge,
tightly grasping the rope.

Hope and doubt go hand in hand,
never knowing when to stop or continue with faith,
either crawling slowly or exhausting all strength.

I can not stop the river,
so I will stay aboard my boat and drift through time,
accepting the terms of my destiny,
summoning all inner courage,
taking on the rapids, watching ahead for the next turn,
always listening for the next waterfall…

I will continue to learn and gain wisdom
as I follow and experience
the many Rivers of Life.

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you.

Beautiful Poem. The description of your desires really tells about who you are. I really enjoy the line about still young and teachable. Keep dreaming

Loved your first dramatic line, and the rest didn't disappoint, either.

Over all this flows as grand as the river you portray yet I find the second line distracting the point made, by the using of "if" within the statement.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.
