    Poem Commentary

    My wish is that survivors
    of sexual abuse hold on
    tightly, even in their
    darkest hour, the happiness
    of being a child....somewhere....
    sometime...even if only
     for a moment...even if only
    in a dream....

    no one's child

this is where my memories are....
where I used to run and play....
    be a child...if only for a while....
where, at night, I'd often pray....

this is where my nightmares are....
where I cried myself to sleep....
when the darkness brought the terror....
    the stairs...footsteps...shadows...creep....

this is where my life ended....
where I ceased to be just me....
    when someone else took over....
    where tears flowed easily....

this is where I don't remember....
    a mother's gentle touch....
where there was no hand to hold....
    no happiness...no love..........

thank you very much. i actually wrote this quite some time ago and never wanted to share it or most of what i write with anyone but discovered it wasn't only releasing for me but helpful to others. now i don't mind sharing the deepest thoughts i have and when i hear such kind words from a reader, i know i was right in sharing it. thank you.

Poetry comes nearer to vital truth than history.
