    Poem Commentary

I figured I would do something different!

    Emma Lynn

    Why would I do that?
    I really am ashamed
    You are at fault too
Not just me, we did this together

Wow. I messed up big time!
    I guess I finally know
    Now I have a baby
Thats grown and grown and grown

Will time ever tell the truth
    About that awful night?
    Who knows
    I guess it doesnt matter

Its been two years since shes been born
    I named her Emma Lynn
She is the most precious thing I've ever seen
    But theres something bugging me

Wheres the man who helped me
Get to where I am now
He decided to take a plane
    Anywhere from here

I ask if he will ever come back
For my baby needs a dad
Will I be a single mother?
I really feel like crying at that

I feel like there is no one here
    But Emma Lynn and I
Just the two of us for now
    Until I find another guy

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
