    Ghostly Images

somewhere high on a moor in Scotland

ghostly images dance to a fiddler’s tune

    bracken and heather surround them

As they spin and leap and swoon

    fronds extend their eerie fingers

mimicking dead hands of the past

    a bonfire burns eternally

but no shadows does it cast

flame’s reach high into the ancient sky

In search of visions of times past

the fiddle plays on and  the images dance

     Refreshed by the cobblers last

who are these ghosts? why do they dance?

    one answer stands  above all

they are the sons of Scotland it’s said

who  died in defense of her soil

they stand on guard, if needed

to once again defend her shore

they dance and wait and listen

for the bagpipes mournful call to war

I really like this poem. It brings to life the mythical beliefs/ideas of Scotland and its surrounding area. Excellent metaphoric texture.

Hi, Hampton! A fellow Scottish lad and poet! Sharply vivid imagery you've conjured herein. '...fronds extend their eerie fingers...', that sets the scene well. The opening line launches very effectively with its vague location. And the last verse reminds us that Scotland's past isn't really all too long ago - it maintains its relevance, however mysterious its history has since become. Hamps, lol, I wrote something EXACTLY along these lines - Scotengire's Missive - you should love it! Smashing write!!

I read your poem and I must say I was impressed with its depth and beauty. Worthy of the winning poem.. irrespective of what ever scoring system they apply.

Well, thankyou sir! Btw, "Friends" is unforgettable - hilarious that you actually spent effort for that! I'll be reading more of you, and check out my others. Hey, here's an idea, maybe the scoring system should be a random draw, lol! Peace, Hamps, yer a good soul!!

If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.
