Poem Commentary

A girl I knew.........we met by chance on a phone call......she was calling my friend, her brother. She was 3 years my junior. I was in college and she in high school. She lived in Baltimore and I in Boston....so far away. Her voice was like sweet butter.

God’s Angel, She Called

God’s Angel, She Called

Taronis – ‘03

Her voice stirred me with her unexpected call

Brown and rich and a bit effervescent

A voice I could savor, so warm, so sweet

Pleasant and full of smiling, unsure of words

Trembling nervous like the young girl she is

Provocatively inviting like the woman she is

We met never hearing a sound, sharing words

We drew closer sharing familiar expressions

Her young ideas measured against what she sees

Measured against my superficial acumen

Madness darling, as I am just a man

But somehow she is there, tender and full of expression

She elates my spirit with a simple hello

And makes me wish that I was, as I was, years ago

I smile with her words as she imparts them freely

This woman so far yet so cordial and at ease

Her world like salve on my world-battered knees

This astonishing girl that brings me to younger days

Her voice stirred me with he unexpected call

Warm and serene, gracious and kind

Velvet satin, delicate moving, blithe and calm

I rise on each phrase in dreamy wishing

This soul so far and I beyond her few years

Each day our speaking of smiles, wanting, and tears

The happiness she brings, a gift for the soul

This sprite-sounding woman, this girl brightens my way

With happy encouragement she holds gloom at bay

A smile and nervous quiver I heard in her voice

A warm lust for life and glad wishes for all

God’s angel uses a telephone, she gave me a call

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.

Aristotle (384 BC-322 BC) Greek philosopher.
