    Poem Commentary

    to my friend Vikki

    Quiet on Winter’s Day

Quiet on Winter’s Day Ted Aronis ’99 – for a lady in the south – share the snow Vikki Cold, crisp, and biting. The air is light and clean and full of snow. The wind tears through my cloak. The wind is the only sound. The sky is cold, dark, and full of white. The depth grows and the cold! Oh the cold! The quiet! The quiet of the storm. The morn is bracing and full of snow, the snow, on Winter’s day. Fear not this cold, it is part of us all. Here in the North, we love the snow. We love the snow and all it gives. Closeness, and warmth, and springtime flowers. Oh, powerful Winter and all her powers, we revel in the snow! Looking through the wood I see the snow, ever increasing, ever deepening, the snow. The colors of white and blue and gray. No green, no red, no colors gay. Just the bleak palate of the Winter’s day. Cold and silent and full of snow. The snow falls and hides all sound. On days like this we carry our own warmth. Of times in Winter with those who are loving. Of walks in the slow, and games that we play, with those that we love. On Winter’s day. Of twinkling eyes, and cheeks of red, of cheerful sounds, of the snow. On Winter’s day. Though the sky is gray, our hearts are light and our souls are merry. For we make our own warmth, all of us as one. With love and cheer I set my blessing. Let the snow fall. Be warm and know you’re loved. Be with us in spirit and enjoy the snow. Be in our heart. Be with us. On Winter’s day.

Poetry is either something that lives like fire inside you or else it is nothing, an empty formalized bore around which pedants can endlessly drone their notes and explanations.
