I have loved

    I have loved

I have loved once before, a holy thing.

In my heart, I’ve heard the angels sing,

felt below my feet a trembling ground

and in my ardor knew my reason found

in the shadow beneath my lover’s wing.

I’ve known the serenity warm arms bring

and felt two throbbing hearts in evening.

Here in this hot embrace peace was found.

                                  I have loved once before.

Before this time in my youthful spring,

    slumbering before the man’s awakening

in a dream, I felt a passion so profound,

in that fantasy heard music all around.

It was then I heard the true love’s ring.

                                I have loved once before.

Nice, understatement really. I have also loved once before...like that. I've been told that some people are never lucky enough to know real love. I should celebrate not grieve when it's gone.

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

    Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
