Veteran’s Day

Veteran’s Day

Sadly we cry the nation’s state and mourn

those fallen heroes never recognized,

whose happy lives were beaten, burst, and torn

by noble war for cause yet realized.

Sing and dance about the honored stanchion

beneath unfurled, waving stripes and stars,

rejoice those valued dead of everyone

to heal and take away the country’s scars.

Yet spike the cannon, dull the saber’s edge,

for blood is not a nation’s only stock,

better liberty than the warrior’s pledge

to hold a state above such poppycock.

In pomp and circumstance a war is held,

while in humility is peace compelled.

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
