    Poem Commentary

    Life's too short, too busy...

    I’d Rather

    I’d rather ring a bell
than live my life in hell.
    Better to make a friend
    than with my ways offend.
    Much nicer to dance,
    or have a sweet romance
than waste my time in woe
    having nothing to show
    for my days of living.
    I’d rather be giving
    favors, things, love and such
    than always taking much
    and owing all the more.
    I’d rather not keep score
and try to win this game
then, when lost, seek to blame.
    I’d rather ring a bell,
    or write a fresh Rondel,
    or sail a masted ship
on a long and happy trip
than spend my days in grief,
cause, well, life’s just too brief.
    I’d rather ring a bell
than spend my days in hell.

Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion.
