Loveless

Loveless

Do not doubt for a second, I am
Truly in love with your soul -
Though in a loveless way, so
Do not say that your heart I stole.

Strangely asymmetrical is the duet
Sung by the interpretations we gave to the evening;
And equally strange is your belief
That all the things I say have a secret meaning.

So forgive me, for the slight confusion I feel
When I think of what goes on between you and me
Does not erase the simple truth
That our love is a love that can never be.

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
