    Poem Commentary

A written tribute to a friend on the passing of her mother

    OUR WALK THROUGH THE LABYRNTH

    OUR LABYRINTH

    WE WALKED INTO THE LABYRINTH

    THE SKY A DAPPLED GRAY

YOU SEEMED IN SUCH A PENSIVE MOOD

DID YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS DAY?

IM SURE YOU THOUGHT IT INEVITABLE

    THAT SOMEDAY YOU WOULD LEAVE.

NOTHING PREPARED ME FOR THIS LOSS,

    NOTHING PREPARED ME TO GRIEVE.

THE WORDS YOU SAID CAME BACK TO ME,

I REMEMBERED YOUR VOICE AND TONE

    “TODAY WE’LL WALK THIS TOGETHER

THE NEXT TIME YOU’LL WALK IT ALONE.”

IT’S NOT AS I IMAGINED; BUT,

    THOSE WORDS AS I RECALL,

SPOKE OF ME WALKING WITHOUT YOU

BUT I’M NOT WALKING ALONE AT ALL.

I’LL THINK OF OUR DAYS SPENT TOGETHER

OUR HOPES AND OUR DREAMS THROUGH THE YEARS

THOSE MEMORIES KEEP YOU RIGHT BY MY SIDE

STILL I KNOW THAT I'M GOING TO SHED TEARS

THE DEAR LORD  SPOKE AND CALLED YOU

HIS SERVANT HE HAD TO CLAIM

I KNOW YOU'LL BE STANDING AND WAITING FOR ME

WHEN I HEAR THE LORD CALLING MY NAME

For Laurie, A tribute to her Mother

This is a warm and comforting way to begin to move through grief. A labyrinth is a fitting metaphore for this process...( it took me 20 years to get through mine). Beautiful write, well done!

Intriguing. Brilliantly written, and I enjoyed reading it. That's an interesting way to look at death - a walk through a labyrinth. That line "today we'll walk this together, the next time you'll walk it alone" is so endearing and sad. But all in all, this is a comforting message to one experiencing loss.

Her Mother actually said those words. At the retreat she said she thought she was just being a Mom at the time and said,Öh Mom". When she spoke at the retreat my heart broke for her.

If I feel physically as if the top of my head were taken off, I know that is poetry.

    Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) American poet.
