The TEMPTATIONS OF BELIAL

Poem Commentary

As a former art student I was perusing some old art and saw two pictures of the Demon Belial. In this one he's dancing before Solomon. In the other picture I had previously posted he giving his credentials to King David ( I didn't know Demons had written references)I wondered why these two rulers would even let Belial in the door. Upon contemplation I wrote this poem thinking that had Belial shown up while I was at the palace, it  would have been his. That's my whole point, the kings didn't have to run and neither do I. God does not give us a spirit of fear. I wrote this poem because the Kings were not afraid and were obviously definitely under God's protective hand as we will be if we only ask.

The TEMPTATIONS OF BELIAL

THE TEMPTATIONS OF BELIAL

Was it just by happenstance

That Solomon watched Belial Dance?

And David sat in patient silence

As this fallen angel spoke alliance

These two great kings were God’s anointed

By his will they were appointed

To lead and serve  all Israel

So why consort with fiends from hell?

Did they have a special knowledge
Learned in God’s own sacred college?
They knew they had God’s great protection
So they could take this strange direction

The look from both kings, almost smirks
Foretold Belial’s plans wouldn’t work.
The demon of lawlessness and confusion
Could not tempt them with his illusions

He was dismissed by both great men
Who knew that he’d come back again
Appearing in every generation
To bring about mankind's damnation .

A real demon seeks to hasten man's  fall
and works  with unmitigated gall
cloaking their identities  behind a disguise
Hoping we won't be prayerful or wise

If this should happen what you must do
Is call on the Lord to take care of you
Pray to be under his protective hand
Then against  the Devil take your stand.

Sound biblical advice brought to life through verse. Your imagination and talent are shining here, 10 from me.

The demons that we face throughout life come in many forms and temptation is at all times knocking at our door. Your poem, and especially its ending, provide the source of strength needed to resist.

This is quite an interesting work relating history many have no idea of. Task well done.

I see I didn't know very much about Belial, except I found pictures of this so called Demon being admitted to the courts of David and Solomon and wondering why.

Thanks Clifton. I didn't really know who Belial was except he didn't seem to belong entertaining the kings of Israel. Maybe they didn't fear demons in those days but I know me and I would run.

This is a great poetic history writing. I love the religious subject matter, and I feel that you captured the history of the Belial Demon well. Great job.

Thank you Orsonav. The more I researched the more confused I got. Some text said Belial was the father of Lucifer which I wondered about because they were all Angels. I wish I knew more about biblical history and the best way to study it.

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
