POLICE BRUTALITY.

Poem Commentary

I couldn't fall asleep last night and watched a show about courtroom incidents. This one about the murder of an innocent man and the reaction to the beating the perpetrator received stuck in my mind

POLICE BRUTALITY.

The defendant sat quietly until the guilty verdict was announced.
Without warning, he grabbed the pistol of a corrections officer
and shot the prosecuting attorney in the face.
The attorney died a terrible death.

To escape, the defendant jumped from the fourth story window.
He was apprehended shortly thereafter.
When he came back  into the courtroom he wore a Hannibal Lecter mask.
His face was so distorted that everyone in the room was stunned.
His mother saw his face and jumped up and screamed police brutality.

She was led from the courtroom screaming about injustice
The pepetrators of the beating were found innocent
Never once did I hear his mother say to him
"Son you have killed a man, shot him in his face. Don't you think that's very brutal?"

Were the scales of justice even that day

I really enjoyed this poem. Thank you for sharing it. It depicts injustice and more injustice.

Ending the poem with a question for the reader to pnder was a nice touch. Scales of justice mean little when your children are involved. A lot of parents can only the child they loved and cared for. 10 from me.

You are correct. I don't know how I would act if I was a mother in similar circumstance. I hope I would stop my child from shooting and fleeing after killing an innocent.

Poetic and yet, like listening to the 10 O' Clock news, which I haven't watched for 15 years. Bravo!

I understand. The news is either grim or is totally silly sometimes. I don't know if they are doing car chases in the Bay area yet but it's a citywide sport here. The police always catch them and they end up in even more trouble. Last summer a man pushed his way into my home. I had a huge chinese cleaver in my hand and I was very angry because I had knocked two pounds of shrimp on the floor.I think he was a pushy salesman. He thought the cleaver was for him and he ran. When I thought about it later that blade could have decapitated him in one swipe. My daughter had just come home and asked why was he running from away and why was I wielding a cleaver.

I like free style. I agree that this may not qualify as a poem, but your writing is excellent, and as always, your work carries with it a message that is well understood and appreciated.

Thank you. I agree it doesn't qualify as poetry. Just sheer horror. I kept trying to put myself in this mother's place. I would be upset if my offspring was beat to a pulp, but far more upset if they had committed cold blooded murder. Neither is acceptable and its all brutal

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
