the charelston cookie tin

the charelston cookie tin

at grandmas house on a shelf
or up on top the 'fridge
id always see the cookie tin
of charleston chocolate chips

the picture of the cookie seemed
as big as my whole head
at least from where i had stood
it probably could have been

i wonder what was in that tin
cookies or other treats
it was always kept up on a shelf
high above my reach

i never saw the cookie tin
sitting on the floor
never saw it on the table
or behind a cabinet door

always there in plain sight
for everyone to see
were the cookies held there within
for anyone to eat

with the lid snapped down and out of reach
the tin often caught my eye
the curiosity of it all
racing through my mind

must have been just for grandma
not for kids to touch
a special thing kept from me
only for the grown-ups

in my mind id often think
someday id have a tin
one that was all my own
and id share it with my kids

i wonder what happened to
that old cookie tin
the one that i could never touch
made by charleston chocolate chips

This us what I really like about poetry... Me six two 200lbs athletic and well rounded - an average guy with diverse taste...PROUD to read and write poetry because it can be fantacy, sad, joyfuly, impossible or just like this genuine poem ... Warming to the soul so real to life that it flood the mind with memories and images in such a way as to make a smile last well beyond the written words!!! 10

the thing is... i never even asked... i guess i always assumed that if i was supposed to see or have what was in the tin then it would have been at eye level for me...

Dano. I love this whimsical poem that leaves the reader still wondering. Wonderfully constructed with a questioning voice that keeps the reader curious. Superb. ginga

thank you ginga... i think that is the first superb i have ever gotten

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
