Elegy (To Pedro Bulfon)

Poem Commentary

I wrote this poem in memory of my son's friend Pedro Bulfon, a Iraq war veteran who suffering from post war traumatic disorder killed himself with a bullet to his head in front of his brother's home a few days before his wedding. He left behind a 3 year old daughter, his family and many friends who trullu miss him. Rest in peace, Pedro.

Elegy (To Pedro Bulfon)

A young boy I met in the past

His eyes had a beautiful hue

Reflecting his soul straight true.

The young boy befriended my son

together they played hours of childhood games,

discoveries and imagination without end.

When he later moved away.

the ties in the young men’s heart

didn’t allow the friendship to fall apart.

And they kept in touch all along the way

Until the war called him a certain day.

Battle fields, bombs, destruction and pain

Proved to be too much for the soldier’s brain.

Sent home, a deep anguish set in

Cries in the night, terror in the day.

He couldn’t face the man he had become.

And so

In a desperate moment of loneness and fear

He tried to kill the monster trapped within.

The quietness of the night was pierced by a blast and a fall

In a vanishing second the young man was no more.

The beautiful eyes, the friend, the father, the son:

 All Gone.

Life, hope and all else.

Gone.

Astonished by his death

Once again I ponder upon what the war

Corrodes,

all it rips apart

As the memory of the young boy

I sadly cherish deep in my heart.

I want to thank you for this poem. As his fiance and the mother of his daughter, seeing that someone cared enough to do this really overwhelmes my heart with a bittersweet feeling, so many loved him yet he felt so alone...Thank you for honoring his memory

very eloquently put, the struggles of the mind when made to perform some task against our judgement and nature. very hard to reconcile misdeeds done even at the behest of a nation.....I have sons in the military and am more concerned at the mental damage to them than the physical.....they are young and understand that part and the risks but they do not know their emotional frailty from the loss of humanity that is necessary in a soldier at war. There must be honor even in war or we are all lost as a species

Milkman, TY for your comment and reflection. I'll keep your sons in my prayers. I often struggle with the need for war and it touches my soul deeply that we have to send our children into the enemies territory... May God protect your sons minds as He protects their bodies.

Poetry is what gets lost in translation.

Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
